Did You Know?

Since 2015, 18 people have been killed, 17 people have been seriously injured, and 1,209 crashes have been recorded along this section of Coors Boulevard.

Bernalillo County sees such dangerous conditions as unacceptable and is implementing measures to eliminate traffic deaths and severe injuries.

This project will benefit all road users and community members who...

  • drive and ride in vehicles
  • take transit
  • are pedestrians and bicyclists
  • cross the street
  • use mobility devices (such as wheelchairs)

This project is not a bicycle and pedestrian plan.

The improvements will be implemented along Coors Boulevard from Gun Club Road in the south to Blake Road in the north.

Safe Streets for All is a national program that Bernalillo County has received funding from to improve our local streets.

Driven by data, this strategy aims to eliminate traffic deaths and severe injuries among all people that use our roads. It also improves public health and prioritizes universal access for everyone regardless of how they get around.

Vision Zero is a global strategy that aims to eliminate traffic fatalities and severe injuries, while recognizing the need for safe mobility that benefits everyone equally. Vision Zero aims to make clear that traffic deaths are preventable; it holds system designers (like transportation planners and roadway engineers) and policymakers (like elected officials) accountable for the controllable factors that determine the safety of roads.

Bernalillo County is making a safety commitment for walkers, bikers, and drivers who deserve safe, accessible, and equitable mobility.

The NMDOT is also planning intersection improvements at the intersection of Coors Boulevard and Barcelona Road, which will include added turn lanes, improved signage, and enhanced striping to increase safety and traffic efficiency. The project is currently in the preconstruction (pre-2028) programming phase with a total budget of approximately $1 million secured under Surface Transportation Program Flex funds (STPFlex) funding. funding.

The NMDOT is conducting a corridor study on the NM 500 (Rio Bravo Boulevard) corridor, from Isleta Boulevard westward toward either 98th or 118th Street, exploring improvement alternatives, and laying the groundwork for preliminary design under the Phase IA/IB process Once the corridor study defines preferred alternatives and design scope, the project can move into the environmental review, preliminary and final design, and ultimately construction phases following NMDOT’s standard development sequence.

The corridor study includes developing alternatives for the Rio Bravo/Coors Boulevard intersection.

The City of Albuquerque’s ABQ RIDE Forward project, launched in August 2022, is an effort to comprehensively redesign the city’s bus network to better match evolving transit needs. It followed a rigorous three-phase process: assessing current conditions, presenting draft concepts, and ultimately developing a balanced “Recovery Network” that was finalized in June 2025. With the new service network ready for phased implementation beginning in summer 2025, it promises more frequent service on busy corridors and expanded evening and weekend coverage across the system.
