What is the problem?
Since 2015, at least 18 people have been killed, 17 people have been seriously injured, and 1,209 crashes have been recorded along Coors Boulevard between Blake Road and Gun Club Road.

The NMDOT is also planning intersection improvements at the intersection of Coors Boulevard and Barcelona Road, which will include added turn lanes, improved signage, and enhanced striping to increase safety and traffic efficiency. The project is currently in the preconstruction (pre-2028) programming phase with a total budget of approximately $1 million secured under Surface Transportation Program Flex funds (STPFlex) funding. funding.
The NMDOT is conducting a corridor study on the NM 500 (Rio Bravo Boulevard) corridor, from Isleta Boulevard westward toward either 98th or 118th Street, exploring improvement alternatives, and laying the groundwork for preliminary design under the Phase IA/IB process Once the corridor study defines preferred alternatives and design scope, the project can move into the environmental review, preliminary and final design, and ultimately construction phases following NMDOT’s standard development sequence.
The corridor study includes developing alternatives for the Rio Bravo/Coors Boulevard intersection.
The City of Albuquerque’s ABQ RIDE Forward project, launched in August 2022, is an effort to comprehensively redesign the city’s bus network to better match evolving transit needs. It followed a rigorous three-phase process: assessing current conditions, presenting draft concepts, and ultimately developing a balanced “Recovery Network” that was finalized in June 2025. With the new service network ready for phased implementation beginning in summer 2025, it promises more frequent service on busy corridors and expanded evening and weekend coverage across the system.

Bernalillo County’s Coors Boulevard Sector Development Plan is a long-range planning initiative covering roughly 1,277 acres along South Coors Boulevard, spanning from Bridge Boulevard to Gun Club Road. Its purpose is to establish a redevelopment vision promoting mixed-use centers, housing diversity, sustainable growth, and a safer multimodal corridor by coordinating land use, transportation, housing, economic development, utilities, and sustainability strategies.
